Rama-Setu: Real or fake ?

In this article, lets verify the existence of Rama Setu.

Rama Setu, officially known as Adam’s bridge is one of the heated debates in India. It is said that Lord Rama, in order to save his wife Sita, who was kidnapped by Ravana, with his army of monkeys built a bridge which connects the Southern tip of India to Shri Lanka.

What exactly is Adam’s Bridge ?

According to Britannica.org, it is a chain of shoals, between the islands of Mannar, near northwestern Sri Lanka, and Rāmeswaram, off the southeastern coast of India. The bridge is 30 miles or 48 kilometers long. [1]

Is Adam’s bridge made by Lord Rama ?

The answer is No. Now Here the concept of Tombolo comes. A Tombolo is deposition landform by which an island becomes attached to the mainland by a narrow piece of land such as a spit or bar.[2] Such land formations are natural and NASA has stated that Adam’s bridge is a tombolo. [3]

Ramayana vs Reality

Ramayana as a mythology took place 7,000 years ago. So, Adam’s bridge must be formed 7,000 years ago but Thermoluminescence dating by GSI concludes that the dunes between Dhanushkodi and Adam’s Bridge started forming about 500–600 years ago. [4]

The description of the bridge mentioned in Ramayana is quite contrary to the actual description of the bridge.

Valmiki Ramayana Verse 74, Yuddha Kanda, Chapter 22

दशयोजनविस्तीर्णम् शतयोजन मायतम्||

ददृशुर्देवगन्धर्वा नलसेतुम् सुदुष्करम् ||

“The celestials and Gandharvas, the heavenly musicians saw Nala’s bridge, having a width of 10 yojanas and Length of 100 yojanas and which is very difficult to be built.”[5]

1 Yojana = 18 miles[6]So, According to the verse, Rama setu is 180 miles wide and 1800 miles long.

But in reality, the bridge is 3km wide and 30 miles long. [7]

There are so many Ramayanas. One Mr. Chudalayaandi Kambar in Tamil nadu has written a Ramayana commanly known as Kamba Ramayana. According to Kamba Ramayana Sita is the daughter of Ravana. The followers of Jain religion has another version of Ramayana. In this version Ravana is a Genious. He has a necklace with nine precious gems. Ravana, s head reflects in these nine gems resembles Ravana has 10 heads.
Another kind of Ramayana believe in Thailand. In this version Sita describes as the sister of Rama.

So the story of Ramayana spreads in different manner.
Hence Rama Setu is only an imaginary concept and not real

Further the stories in the Ramayana and Mahabharatha resemble the stories in the greek epic Illiod and Odissy.
